Even though cats spend a majority of their time lounging about and sleeping, they can certainly get into a bit of trouble. And like dogs or even humans, cats need entertainment, exercise, and companionship. What can you do to make your home more hospitable, to ensure your cat is happy and healthy?
Get rid of toxic plants. Surprisingly, even though they’re carnivores, cats will nibble on plants. And because some plants are toxic, this can be a problem for your kitty. When in doubt, research any houseplants to be sure they’re not toxic before bringing one home.
Purchase more than one litter box. If your home is on the large side, has multiple levels, or you own several cats, you will need more than one litter box. This can keep cats happy, and happy cats use their bathroom spots more faithfully.
Get a cat tree. Cats need to climb, sharpen their claws, and enjoy resting spots up high where they can view the rest of the room. Get a cat tree and it can serve all of these purposes – and perhaps prevent your sofa from being shredded.
Offer a few boxes. Any time Amazon makes a delivery, offer the box to your cat. For some reason, cats are just obsessed with boxes, and having something new to explore is good for her physical and mental stimulation.
Install a window seat. A number of window seats or boxes, designed especially for cats, are available on the market. And in most cases, they’re simple to install. Give your kitty a view of the yard, perhaps near a bird feeder, and he’ll be mesmerized for hours!
Pick up a few toys. Grab a few toys, especially those including catnip, so that you can interact with your cat in a fun way. Toys also encourage exercise and therefore help to prevent obesity, which can be a problem in older cats.
Try running water. Cats can be notoriously finicky about their water. But because most felines prefer running water, installing a pet-friendly fountain will probably thrill her.
Entertainment. YouTube actually has videos for cats to watch, and Pandora has music for cats!
Enhance their chilling habits with pheromones. Feliway (pheromones) spray or plug in. Pheromones can also be used to reduce stress-induced behavior in cats. They mimic natural pheromones that send calming messages to cats. This helps reduce stress-related behaviors such as hiding, scratching, or spraying.
And of course, consult with us if you have any questions about keeping your kitty happy at home. Any time you notice concerning behaviors, we can help you diagnose them and make changes that help your pet thrive.
