When You’re Away, Make Sure the Pets Play!

For many pet owners, leaving their furry companions alone at home can be a source of concern. Boredom can lead to anxiety, destructive behavior, and other health issues in both dogs and cats. But with a little creativity and effort, you can ensure that your pets stay entertained and mentally stimulated during the workday.

1. Interactive Toys and Treat Dispensers. Interactive toys and treat dispensers are excellent tools to keep your pets engaged. These toys can be filled with treats or kibble, and they require pets to interact and solve puzzles to get the treats out. It’s a fun and rewarding activity that can keep them entertained for hours.

2. Puzzle Feeders. Puzzle feeders are another great way to challenge your pets mentally. These toys are designed to make pets work for their food, stimulating their brains and keeping them occupied. Dogs and cats will enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to get their treats or food from these interactive feeders.

3. TV or Music for Pets. Believe it or not, there are TV channels and streaming services specifically designed for pets. They feature shows or videos tailored to capture your pet’s attention. Some pets also respond well to calming music, which can help reduce their anxiety and provide a soothing atmosphere while you’re away.

4. Window Views. For cats, having access to a window with a view of the outside world can be very stimulating. They love to watch birds, squirrels, and other outdoor activities. Consider setting up a cozy perch near a window so your cat can enjoy the entertainment of the great outdoors from the safety of their indoor environment.

5. Sensory Toys. Toys that engage multiple senses, such as toys that make noise, have different textures, or release scents, can keep your pets intrigued and entertained. Cats, in particular, enjoy toys with feathers or bells that mimic the movement and sounds of prey.

6. Regular Exercise. Before you leave for work, make time for play and exercise. A tired pet is a content pet, and they’re more likely to rest and relax while you’re gone. A good play session or a walk can help burn off excess energy, making them more comfortable during your absence.

7. Consider a Pet Sitter or Dog Walker. If possible, hire a pet sitter or dog walker to check on your pets during the day. They can provide companionship, playtime, and bathroom breaks, which can significantly alleviate boredom and anxiety.

A stimulated and content pet is a healthier and more well-adjusted companion. And of course, they’ll still be thrilled to greet you, with wagging tails or enthusiastic purrs, at the end of the work day! But if you still feel concerned about your pet’s health or happiness, let’s discuss these issues at your next check-up.
